System description:

This 500 Watt Power system is designed for motorhomes with limited electrical demands or equipment. The system satisfies basic power needs for 12 V lighting, radio/TV/DVD, a satellite dish and a few 230 V devices, such as a laptop, electrical toothbrush and your mobile telephone charger. The heart of the system consists of a sturdy and maintenance free gel or AGM battery. Used normally, the battery will deliver enough power for at least a weekend, independently of the engine alternator or grid voltage.

To extend the battery usage the system is equipment with a solar charge regulator so the batteries are charged via the PV panels. Besides charging via the solar panels the batteries will be charged while driving with the Mastervolt Charge mate.

Mastervolt launches new 12-volt Lithium-Ion battery

Leading electrical specialist, Mastervolt, is proud to announce the launch of a 12-volt Lithium-Ion marine battery, packaging the lightweight cells into the same case as its popular 24-volt sister.

The new battery has been in development for some time as part of Mastervolt’s ongoing research within the EU’s HYMAR (Hybrid Marine) initiative. Lithium-Ion technology has long been the material of choice for portable electronic items due to its light weight (a third that of water) combined with long life, no memory effect and deep cycle capabilities. Mastervolt was the first company to bring a full size 24-volt version to the marine market, and due to this Award-winning battery’s success, a 12-volt version has now also been released. This allows boat owners to have the option of 12-volt or 24-volt Lithium-Ion performance with the same footprint, which is a third of the size and weight of an equivalent lead-acid battery for the same 4.3 kWh of power.

The steady rise in demand for Lithium-Ion, most notably in hybrid propulsion systems, has also led to a steady lowering of prices, now down 20% from the original launch price. For ease of installation, the new 12-volt battery is the same ergonomically designed case, which safely packages the advanced cell balancing technology and allows the battery to be seamlessly connected to Mastervolt’s intelligent battery charging system.

The stylish and robust case, in distinctive green Mastervolt livery, also has large carrying handles, and sophisticated electronics to allow ultra-fast charging and discharging. The real beauty of Lithium-Ion, apart from its light weight, is that it can be deep cycled by 80% capacity for up to 2,000 cycles without harming its long lifespan.

"We have had a huge amount of interest in Lithium-Ion since it was launched in 2008," said Marketing Manager Marc Persoon. "The new 12-volt version was originally in a smaller casing during the prototyping, but we decided to keep the footprint the same as the 24-volt model and double the capacity. This makes it easier for production builders to make provision for Lithium- Ion systems in new builds. The price is also coming down due to increased demand. Even so, we are seeing a great take up for these ultra-safe batteries, especially in blue water yachts that need regular deep cycling for hotel loads, but with three times the lifespan of ordinary lead-acid batteries. The connectivity with the rest of the yacht’s systems, through the MasterBus network which includes the MasterView monitoring screens, is also a huge selling point. We are convinced that Lithium-Ion is the future for battery technology, especially with the deep-cycle needs of propulsion."

Mastervolt – Helping to save lives with NRMA CareFlight

NRMA CareFlight recently required power electronics for its helicopter training simulator based at the Westmead Hospital in Sydney. This simulator is designed to help train and teach trauma specialists and senior registrars the skills needed to perform critical care duties while attending a rapid response emergency medical retrieval.

NRMA CareFlight was in the need of specific equipment to operate it’s simulator in "real life" situations. After meetings with several electronics manufactures in this field the CareFlight team decided that the Mastervolt Power Electronics package was best suited for its requirements.

The package consists of Mastervolt AGM deep cycle batteries, ChargeMaster battery chargers, Mass Sine inverters and digital battery monitoring systems for the simulator.

Cameron Wade from CareFlight said "The CareFlight rescue winch simulator allows the doctors and aircrew to practise winching and patient care scenarios as a team; we require a strong, well developed and reliable electrical system so we can move the simulator into remote areas for training seminars at a moments notice. Mastervolt upgrades its Mass Charger range for even better endurance in tough environments.

Leading Dutch electrical specialist Mastervolt has just completed a system-wide upgrade on its top-end battery chargers, the Mass Charger range.

These rugged chargers have already proved themselves to be completely reliable in some of the harshest conditions afloat, yet Mastervolt has made them tougher still with an even greater resistance to heat, vibration, humidity, and condensation. It has also added a number of technological improvements, including MasterBus connectivity.

Mastervolt’s Mass Chargers are part of the ‘best in class’ range. Available in 12, 24 and 48-Volt models, they are also in demand on commercial ships, explorer vessels and offshore oil installations, where they ensure that full battery power is available 24/7, which is crucial in an emergency.

What sets these chargers apart is the over-engineering of the components and the use of high-frequency electronics, which leaves them under-stressed and operating at much lower internal temperatures. The chassis is made from anodised aluminium to prevent corrosion, and Mastervolt has thoughtfully kept the footprint exactly the same as earlier models, so a straight swap during a refit or overhaul can be done with minimal down time.

A special cooling process means the Mass Charger range can operate at full power, continuously, in an engine room with the temperature at a blistering 45 ^oC, and the vibration rating is to the demanding IEC60945 standard. Reliability is in excess of 280,000 hours without failure (MTBF), and the Mass Charger emits only ultra-low electromagnetic radiation, so nearby systems will be unaffected. It also has electromagnetic immunity from transformers or pumps that may share the bulkhead.

Because of the commercial and superyacht applications, the approvals on all 230V single phase 24/75 and 24/100 Mass Chargers are to DNV, Germanische Lloyd, Bureau Veritas, and Lloyds standards. This allows older chargers to be swapped for the upgrades whilst still preserving the approvals.

Rugged reliability apart, the Mass Charger also excels at its job – providing clean, DC output from what could be intermittent and unreliable shore power. In fact, the output is so clean the charger can be used as a dedicated power supply in it’s own right, with a unique power take-off.

The input range of voltages can be harnessed between 190-265V, and the heavy-duty design allows for full current delivery even though vessels cable losses require the charger to charge at a voltage of 30V. After 20 years of research and development, the 3-phase step charger technology has proved itself to be the quickest and most efficient way to keep healthy batteries at peak condition. The process is also ideal for revitalising completely flat batteries to minimise the ill effects of total discharge.

If there is an interruption in the shore-power during the process, the Mass Charger picks up where it left off, rather than starting the 3-phase cycle all over again. There is even a setting for the delicate charging of Nickel Cadmium batteries.

Amongst the upgrades is the addition of full MasterBus connectivity, allowing the charger to communicate with the rest of a Mastervolt system by means of a single ‘plug and play’ CAN-bus cable. This provides total monitoring and automatic control of the distribution system when power is being generated from several different sources.

"We’ve made the best even better," explained Marc Persoon, Mastervolt’s Marketing Manager. "The Mass Charger range is the ultimate in reliability. We have maintained the dimensions and connections of the earlier models, but managed to actually improve the design from the experience of 10 years of heavy use, from the Polar Regions to the Tropics."

The Mass Charger range features 11 models in total, with two 12-volt, seven 24-volt and two 48-volt versions.

Mastervolt extends range Mass Combi

Leading Dutch-based electrical specialist Mastervolt is proud to announce the addition of two 48-volt models to its impressive line-up of Mass Combi inverter/battery chargers. The two new models are designed to help cater for the growing demand for e-propulsion systems.

The Mass Combi is a remarkably intelligent power management system, combining a sophisticated battery charger with a pure sine wave inverter. When the yacht is running on mains power, either from a shore connection or from the generator, the Mass Combi ensures the careful charging of the batteries, and also has a slave output to charge an engine start or bow-thruster battery.

However, if there is a sudden surge in demand, such as when an air-conditioner starts up, the system automatically brings in the inverter to make up the shortfall. Energy from the battery is applied to support the shore power in powering the demands; hence the name Power Support. Should the shore power drop out altogether, the inverter immediately takes over. This switching takes place 10 times quicker than with conventional technology, and once the crisis has passed, the unit reverts to replacing the lost charge in the batteries.

Completely dead batteries can also be quickly revived, as the system requires no start up power to go into fast-charger mode.

The Mass Combi is very popular, as it allows all the luxury of uninterrupted mains power on board, yet without any interference to TV or radio signals. It operates in complete silence, and provides a computer-friendly no-spike delivery. There are already 16 models of Mass Combi available in 12 and 24-volt versions, and the new 48-volt models are aimed primarily at yachts with hybrid or pure -electric drive systems, which nearly all run at this higher level of voltage.

As with all Mastervolt equipment, the Mass Combis are engineered for the harsh marine environment, and packaged in a tough yet lightweight aluminium and ABS plastic case. Because Mastervolt designs complete systems, all the components are from one supplier and totally compatible. This allows the Mass Combi to communicate seamlessly with the rest of the yacht’s power management system via a single-wire MasterBus connection.

All the Mass Combi’s activity can be monitored and controlled from a single screen, which fits neatly into a nav station or bulkhead. Available in either 3.5 in or 10.5 in versions, the touch panel can also be used to access all the other Mastervolt equipment on board via the MasterBus link.
